Bizarre little SF fic of a sexual nature written by Warren Ellis ([livejournal.com profile] mistersleepless) that everyone should read, if only so they can have strange thoughts (and possibly nightmares) for a day or two:

Dead Men's Pearls

Like so many other things, I blame this one on [livejournal.com profile] laylah_r, too; she and her boi introduced me to Warren Ellis via the twisted sci-fi comic/graphic novel Switchblade Honey.

Also?

I have passed on the RPS cooties. Go me!

My daughter's best friend (who's a closet slashaholic in her own right) is over for a couple of days and I handed her a printout of See Under: Clue, Getting A without telling her what it was. After about a page, she realized what I had done, but by then she was sucked into the story. *g* There were many repetitions of "damn you!" in between bouts of mad giggling and happy sounds.

Thre three of us were also up until one this morning, first looking at pretty pictures of the LotR boys and watching clips of them fondle each other, and then reading aloud the Metaquotes abridged version of Crystalwank 2004 and rolling on the floor laughing.

ETA: I sent a (non-slasher) friend a link to a picsmap of the LotR boys (for some good pics of Sean A, whom she adores) and she IM'd me back: "Golly, those boys have their lips all over each other!" Hee. Yes. Yes, they do.

Oh. My. God.

The first pic should be illegal. I mean, smoking is so not attractive, but....

[livejournal.com profile] bunniewabbit calls it cigarette porn, and I think she's right.

I will give up my firstborn (or, you know, write a story or make an icon of your choice) for the person who gets me that first pic without watermarking. OMG.

ETA: Both [livejournal.com profile] vegetariansushi and [livejournal.com profile] gypsyjolie have de-watermarked the pic for me. You guys rock!

Just...GIP.

It's shareable. If you want it, snag it. No comment or credit necessary.

Sometimes I just can't wrap my head around the LotRiPS fandom.

The "sane" portion of the fandom parades around, shouting at the top of their lungs that "it's not real; we don't believe any of this is truly going on; we're not like the crazies over there with their conspiracy theories; we know it's just fiction," and then as soon as someone writes something edgy or dark or otherwise "unsavory," these same folks are up in arms, complaining that the actors wouldn't do that, or that it's sick or depressing or ruining their fandom....

What happened to "it's just fiction"?

Isn't this just one big game of "let's pretend" in the first place? So how is it somehow worse to write stories where Elijah abuses Dom than to write stories where Elijah buggers Dom? Because, let's face it, neither one is likely to be true and the majority of mundanes would find both ideas equally disturbing. Technically, both are fictional stories about non-fictional people, made up by fans for the consumption of other fans; they're the result of a writer wondering "what if" and exploring a situation that, by definition, is not reality.

Yeah, so maybe it doesn't hit your kink. Maybe it disgusts you, even. You know what? You're obviously not the intended audience, and you don't have to read it! This isn't A Clockwork Orange.

And yeah, it's a bummer that people aren't writing what you want. That sucks and I can feel your pain. But I'm not whinging on in my LJ about how there's not enough of a certain flavor of Orlijah out there, because I know it's not the universe's responsibility to cater to me and my desires -- much as that sucks, too.

Honestly, in the end all I can think of to say is to quote Denis Leary: "Life's hard, get a helmet. Shut the fuck up. Next."

cut-tagged just 'cause )

Now I'm off to read my f-list and see if I can find any TORN party reports. *is so envious of TORN attendees*

In my non-RPS fandoms, I'm an absolute canon whore. It goes along with my being an absolute characterization whore. But the concept of canon in RPS fandoms feels contradictory and uncomfortable to me.

First, let me define the concept of canon as I see it: it's the factual structure of a fandom; the details of the characters and their lives that are gleaned from the source material and maintained (or at least not contradicted) in order to support the authenticity of the fanfic narrative, thus allowing it to be viewed as belonging to the fan-controlled segment of the source material's universe.

Looking at that definition, the entire concept of canon seems to me to be inappropriate to apply to real people. The "source material" is someone's life, and as such it's a really personal thing; I'm torn between my need to have the authenticity provided by canon and my desire to intrude as little as possible upon the person's actual existence.

The argument is easily made that we're fictionalizing the people we write RPS about, which makes applying the concept of canon to their lives no different than it is for any other fandom. That's all well and good, except that (barring a few RPS a/u shared universes) the canon we're using still consists of real facts about real people, regardless of how fictionalized the end result is.

Despite my discomfort, I still find myself being a canon whore, even in RPS. I have a collection of transcribed interviews and articles, my Pictures folder overfloweth, my TiVo is set to auto-record anything to do with LotR or any of the main actors, and I have a calendar specifically to record the dates of various appearances, location shoots, etc.

I don't honestly have any answers, but I welcome discussion. What do y'all think?

You can find the article here, but I'm also going to cut and paste it...

behind the cut. )

I particularly like what she has to say about Aragorn and Legolas during the coronation scene. *g* Unfortunately, I deleted my Aragorn/Legolas icon so I could put up another Elijah one. Doh! *needs more icon space*

According to an article at Hollywood.com:

"Elijah Wood was perhaps the best-turned out gent of the day in a distinctive green suit he said he found in a vintage shop."

Have I mentioned lately that I adore him? Okay, what about in the last thirty seconds? Because, you know? I adore him.

You should probably just ignore this. I'll be embarrassed about it later, anyway. *g*

SPOILERISH squeeing about the Golden Globes )

We've all heard the buzz, but the Academy Award nominations will be officially announced tomorrow. *crosses fingers*

So, after seeing recent appearances by Orlando and Elijah (on Leno and Ellen, respectively), I have a question that can most clearly be asked with the following picture as an illustration:

Fic update

For those of you who are wondering about "Circle Jerk" (which I thought would be finished today), it's still in progress. It seems to have taken on a life of its own and is now three times the length of either "Voyeur" or "Menage a Un," and I'm not quite done yet. I'll post it as soon as it's complete and beta'd.
and_chocolate: (Default)
...new fic! I'm all nervous, as this'll be my first LotRiPS fic posted. *wibbles nervously*

Anyway the series (called "DIY," which is short for Do-It-Yourself) is mainly orlijah. The first two stories (completed and in beta at the moment) are called "Voyeur" and "Menage a Un." The third ("Circle Jerk") is partially done, but shouldn't take too long to finish, and is a bit of a departure from the others in the series as it's viggorlijah.

They're all going to be f-locked, as that's my policy with RPS, so if you're interested in any of the above, feel free to friend me and I'll friend you back. Or, hell, if you don't want to friend me but want to read the fic, post a comment here and I'll friend you with no reciprocal obligation. *g*

Alternately, the stories are going to be posted at [livejournal.com profile] thespecialhell under f-lock as well; feel free to join the community.
