quick British usage question...
Feb. 1st, 2004 11:55 amI know Brits use "hire" the way Americans use "rent" when it comes to things like cars, but does that apply to other things, too? Specifically, I'm thinking about borrowing videos from a shop.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Date: 2004-02-01 01:24 pm (UTC)Not yet, unfortunately. I'm now at the halfway mark, but this is taking an eternity to write. It's huge! I just hit 7,900 words, after inputting last night's writing, and my notebook only has ten more pages left in it. *g*
I've set a goal of the 10th to have this monster finished; I'm hoping to have it done sooner, but I never know what the boys are going to get up to that will delay me. Next up is Sean Bean, and I just know there's going to be some difficulty getting him and Elijah into bed.

I've got more notebooks (three more, just like this one, even). I'm just amazed that I've managed to fill an entire notebook since the end of December. It feels really good to be semi-prolific when it comes to writing!

Re:
Date: 2004-02-01 06:15 pm (UTC)Elijah would please me. You think you can arrange for him? *g* Though I'm not sure that'd help me with writing, as I think I'd be a little too busy. But happy!

Yes, I do. And thanks. It's kind of nifty, after cranking out two or three stories every few years, to have completed four (plus) in the last month-ish.

Date: 2004-02-01 06:18 pm (UTC)I figure if I write 1,000 words a day (which seems to be fairly reasonable, historically), then I should be done before that. If, of course, the second half is about the same length as the first. Maybe I should shoot for 2,000 words a day. (I'm starting to feel like I'm doing NaNoWriMo. *g*)
Anyway, I'm working on it.

Date: 2004-02-01 04:37 pm (UTC)Essentially, the conversation goes as follows:
Brit: "That's what he's been doing since the early '90s--gay pornos."
American: "And how do you know that?"
Brit: "Rented some of 'em."
Also, I could use feedback about whether or not a Brit would call porn videos 'pornos' or if there's another slang term that would work better.

Date: 2004-02-01 05:13 pm (UTC)Porno sounds fine to me, but I'm the first Aussie born in my fam (have been back) I'll ask my brother and get back to you - he and all his mates are total Poms.
